The debris worked its way as far as Tangiwai. It was at Tangiwai on Christmas Eve 1953 that in a similar event of bigger proportions a lahar wiped out the rail bridge. 151 lives were lost when an express locomotive and carriages plunged into the river.

If you dial 111 you'll need your correct address
Lewis Manuel-Domb of the Ruatoria St Johns Ambulance service advised East Coast residents that the 111 service that co-ordinates calls to East Coast Areas will now be dealt with by the Auckland office. So people on the coast should know their correct address to minimise response time. Lewis pointed out that the main cause for confusion is with the main highway known as state HWY 35. It is split into 3 segments. From Gisborne to Tolaga Bay it is known as Uawa Rd, Tolaga Bay to the Ruatoria turnoff is known as Waiapu Rd and from the Ruatoria turnoff to the Te Araroa turnoff it is known as the Te Araroa Rd.

Ngati Porou East Coast go down 28-5 to Thames Valley
The final warm up game for Ngati Porou East Coast was held in great weather in Tolaga Bay on the 5th August. Unfortunately the NPEC boys went down to the swamp foxes, luckily it was not a competition game. The loss highlighted crucial areas to work on with the team and Coaches Buck Gray and Morgan Waitoa have their work cut out for them if they are to be competitive in this years competition but with the entire Coast behind them there is no doubt that it can be done. Kia Kaha NPEC!

Age grade rugby finals for the coast teams
NPEC U-15 North took on the might of GBHS Blue in what many spectators said should have been the final of the open competition. The two teams met in the first of the semi final matches, it was a hard fought match with neither side giving anything away easily. It was tight right through the entire match and GBHS Blue came out winners in the final minutes winning 28-27. In the other semi-final match of the grade NPEC South took on Campion in another close match. I am unsure of the final score but NPEC South won the match. In the U-17 grade NPEC took on GBHS in a thrilling match, NPEC made a stunning comeback before full time clawing their way back from a 19-0 scoreline, at the end of the 80 minute match the scores were tied forcing the game into extra time. An extra 10 minutes each way was played and the Coast boys showed their class and superior fitness scoring 3 unanswered tries in the extra time period. I am unsure of that final score but NPEC U-17 will go on to play in the final opf their grade next saturday.

Youth Dialogue Project and Scholarship
Throughout a year-long program, young people from five countries will learn new ways of transforming debate into collaborative conversation. The Youth Dialogue Project will involve groups of young people from Cyprus, Denmark, the United States, South Africa, and Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Through videoconferencing and on-line dialogue young people (ages 18-22) will learn and practice skills of inquiry, dialogue and conflict resolution. The Youth Dialogue Project will include monthly meetings from September 2006 through till May 2007, taking in the World Forum on Justice, Religion and Conflict Resolution in San Francisco in February 2007
This is a non-political project based on developing cross-cultural dialogue skills and practices and exchanging knowledge and learning about each other's conflict issues and culture. The project organisers have indicated that they want to avoid political grandstanding and are keen to involve young people with "tender ferocity" (or those that really want to learn what that means).
The Rockrose Institute will provide scholarships for the majority of participants. Each scholarship will be worth approximately US$4,000. Every youth member and facilitator will have to "earn" their scholarship by writing up why they are interested in this project, its work and its outcomes and what contribution they want to make. If you are interested in this project please contact:

Local Rangatahi representing the Nth Island and NZ
A selection of Rangatahi from the East Coast recently attended the area schools tournament in Dunedin.
Rerekohu sent two representatives, Tawhai Kururangi(rugby) & Erana Hovell(volleyball) unfortunately both missed out on the teams but both did really well. Ngata Colleges' Matthew Richards(Rugby) & Kyra Dewes(Netball) both made it through the grades, Kyra making the North Island team and Matthew making it into the NZ Area schools team. Tolaga Bay Area School sent a lot of students through and the ones to make the North Island teams were: Rikki Kernohan(BBall), Darcy Rhind(BBall), Aroha Leach(BBall), Hori Leefe(Rugby), Jasmine Paaka-Culpin(BBall). From these students Rikki, Jasmine and Aroha made it into the NZ teams in the codes mentioned above. A lot of other students not mentioned travelled to trial as well, and we congratulate them.

Ngati Porou East Coast Coach Resigns.
The Chairman of the ECRFU announced today that the Board had reluctantly accepted the resignation of Head Coach and Rugby Development Officer Chas Keelan.
This was an unexpected turn of events for the Union with less than five weeks to the start of the new Division One Heartlands Competition.
Chas had taken on the role with high hopes and a belief that local players had what it would take to field a competitive side in the new competition.
However with the expectations of returning to an amateur division, attracting and maintaining players’ interest for the love of the game and pride of the Jersey as well as meeting the rules and regulations in today’s environment created challenges that resulted in his resignation.
The Union was moving to fill these positions as well as the position of Manager as quickly as possible
In the mean time Assistant Coach Buck Gray and Trainer Henry Iona are continuing the pre season programme and the NPEC team will be on track to challenge Thames Valley in Tolaga Bay on the 5th August.

Road Safety Hui identifies local concerns
Drink driving and speed are amongst the concerns held by locals on the East Coast. A hui held on sunday at Uepohatu Hall, Ruatoria highlighted the need for further road safety education within our schools. Guest speakers Dean Kaiwai and Tamati Paul highlighted the issues surrounding dangerous road safety practices. Paul was a victim of a drink driving accident, at the time he was a life saver, was in the national waka ama team, had been chosen to go to the olympics as a kayaker and had also just become a father. The crash left him partially disabled, despite all of this he has become an inspirational speaker who gives first hand accounts on the dangers of driving drunk. The key issues to come out of this hui will help road safety co-ordinators determine the strategies that they will host on the coast. More hui are scheduled in other parts of the East Coast.

RNP in schools
For the past few weeks Kahu and Jasmine of RNP have been out in our local schools in the Ngati Porou rohe scouting and recording local talent. So far they have covered 6 schools. There are 3 more sessions to be held in Tokomaru Bay(Hatea a Rangi), Tolaga Bay and at Hiruharama. The sessions have been succesful with the crew making on average 12 recordings at each kura, the recordings have been of original music and covers displaying the various talents that our Ngati Porou kids have to offer. The workshops have had emphasis on creative writing, song composition, song structure and the art of performing, the students have taken on the challenges of the workshops whole heartedly and they are to be commended. RNP have introduced this initiative as a stepping stone for these students and as a starting point and incentive to enter into the rangatahi section of the manu waiata competition the next time it occurs. Listen to RNP to hear some of the recordings captured in our kura.

"The One" Competition, winner announced.
"The One" was a competition for one person, one voice and one guitar. The judge for the event was Billy T.K Junior and he had the task of choosing a winner from the 5 contestants. His choice for overall winner was Kobi Keefe who sang a maori waiata "E Ihoa". Her prize for winning the competition was a brand new guitar proudly sponsered by Hughie Hughes electrical which was greatly needed as her guitar was a little "tired" having only 4 strings and a few holes. The young singer a former student of Ngata College and a employee of the Hikurangi Foodmarket has a few original compositions and is a keen participant in local kapa haka. Judge Billy T.K gave good advice to the young competitor and also the other contestants, "if you think you've got talent, and you know you have, don't be whakamaa".
